Local SEO for Service Businesses: How to Win Google's Map Pack

Contractors, clinics, law firms, daycares: the businesses that win locally are the ones in Google's three-result Map Pack. Here's what actually gets you there.

Manny

When someone in Western Mass searches “dentist near me,” “personal injury lawyer Springfield,” or “daycare in Chicopee,” Google answers with three businesses pinned on a map: the Map Pack. Those three get the calls. Everyone below the fold is fighting for scraps. Getting into that pack is what local SEO is really about, and it’s the same playbook whether you fix roofs, teeth, contracts, or care for kids.

Here’s what moves the needle.

1. A complete, active Google Business Profile

The Map Pack is built almost entirely from Google Business Profiles, so this is step one, not an afterthought. Claim it, verify it, and fill in everything: the right primary category, services, hours, service area, and real photos. Then keep it alive: a post or fresh photo every week or two tells Google you’re open and working, and Google favors businesses that look active over ones that set it and forgot it. If you want a head start on the photo side, we’ll shoot and publish a free 360° photo for your profile.

2. Reviews: the strongest lever you control

Across every profession, review quantity, quality, and recency are among the biggest factors in who ranks in the pack. They’re also the first thing a customer reads. The move never changes: ask every satisfied client, make it one tap with a direct link, and reply to all of them. For a law firm or a medical practice, that steady stream of recent, specific reviews is often the whole difference between page one and invisible.

3. Consistent name, address, and phone: everywhere

Google cross-checks your business details across the web: your site, your profile, directories, everywhere your name appears. If your phone number or address doesn’t match from one place to the next, Google trusts you less and ranks you lower. Pick one exact format and make it identical across your website and every listing.

4. Get listed where your profession lives

Beyond Google, each field has directories that both send referrals and reinforce your legitimacy to search engines: contractors have Houzz and Angi’s free listing, lawyers have Avvo, Justia, and Martindale, doctors and dentists have Healthgrades and Zocdoc. Claim the ones that matter for your trade, fill them out fully, and keep the details consistent (see #3).

5. A fast website with a page for what you do

Your Google profile gets you into the pack; your website closes the deal when they click through. Two things matter most:

  • Speed on mobile. Most local searches are on a phone. A slow site is a ranking liability and a lost lead: the visitor bounces before it loads.
  • A real page per service. “Family Law in Springfield” or “Pediatric Dentistry in Holyoke” ranks and converts far better than one buried bullet on a generic services page.

Google holds “your money or your life” businesses (healthcare, legal, financial) to a higher bar. Real practitioner bios with credentials, clear contact and location info, and genuine reviews all signal the trustworthiness Google looks for before it puts you in front of someone making a health or legal decision. Skip them and you’ll struggle to rank no matter how good the rest is.

7. The new front door: showing up when people ask an AI

A growing share of “near me” searches now start inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s own AI Overviews. Someone asks an assistant for “the best daycare in Chicopee” or “a personal injury lawyer in Springfield” and gets a short, cited shortlist, no ten blue links to scroll. This is answer-engine optimization (AEO), and the good news is it rewards the same fundamentals as the Map Pack: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name/address/phone, real recent reviews, and clear, well-structured pages, plus clean content and schema an AI can actually read and quote. Nail the six things above and you’re not just ranking on Google; you’re eligible to be the business an AI recommends. It isn’t a separate game: it’s the same foundation answering a new kind of search.

What to expect

Local SEO, and now AI search, isn’t a switch you flip once. It’s a profile kept active, reviews that keep coming, and a site kept fast and current. That’s exactly why we run it as an ongoing service instead of a one-and-done project. Our AI-Powered Website plans build the fast site and the Google Business Profile and keep both tuned every month: the top tier even writes and tunes on its own. If you mainly need the SEO muscle on a site you already have, we do exactly that too: see how we work.
