Turn Your Shop Into an Online Store: What Selling on Shopify Really Takes

Setting up a Shopify store is easy; building one that actually sells (products, payments, emails, an AI shopping assistant) is the real work.

“Just put it on Shopify.” You’ve heard that. And it’s true. You can spin up a Shopify store in an afternoon. What nobody tells you is that a store you set up in an afternoon usually sells about as much as it took to build: nothing. The gap between “I have an online store” and “my online store sells” is real work. Here’s what it actually takes.

Setting up a store is easy. Selling is the job.

Shopify makes the plumbing easy. That’s exactly why we use it. The hard part was never the software. It’s everything that turns a page of products into a shop people actually buy from. Skip that part and you’ve built a nicely designed dead end.

Your products have to earn the click

This is where most stores lose. Every product needs:

  • Real photos: clean, well-lit, from a few angles, showing scale. A phone photo on a messy counter doesn’t sell; it raises doubt.
  • Copy that answers questions: size, materials, what’s included, why it’s good. Shoppers can’t pick it up and turn it over, so the words have to do that for them.
  • Variants set up right (sizes, colors, bundles) so buying is one obvious click, not a puzzle.

Multiply that by your whole catalog and you see why “set up a store” is the small part.

Shoppers are starting to ask an AI what to buy

More people now begin shopping by asking instead of searching: “what’s a good gift for a cherry lover?” typed into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview, which answers with actual product picks. For a store, that’s a brand-new front door, and the good news is it rewards the exact product work above. The clear titles, the copy that answers real questions, the sizes and materials and structured data behind each listing. That’s what an AI reads to decide whether to recommend your product. Half-filled listings don’t just lose human shoppers; they’re invisible to the assistant doing the recommending. Get the product work right and you’re eligible to be the thing the AI suggests.

Payments, shipping, and taxes: the unglamorous half

None of this is optional, and getting it wrong quietly kills sales:

  • Payments and checkout configured so people can actually pay, on their phone, without friction.
  • Shipping: real rates, real boxes, real zones. Surprise shipping costs at checkout are the top reason carts get abandoned.
  • Taxes: set up correctly for where you sell, so you’re not untangling it at tax time.

Retailers and makers especially trip here: selling a physical product online is a different machine than ringing someone up at the counter.

Emails do the selling you’re not there for

Most people don’t buy on the first visit. Email automations bring them back, automatically:

  • a welcome series for new subscribers,
  • an abandoned-cart nudge for the ones who almost bought,
  • receipts and follow-ups that feel personal, not robotic.

Set up once, these run in the background and quietly recover sales you’d otherwise lose.

An AI shopping assistant closes the gap

In a real shop, someone helps: “What goes with this?” “Do you have it in blue?” “Which one for a gift?” Online, that person is usually missing, and the shopper just leaves. An AI shopping assistant puts that help back: it answers product questions, points people to the right item, and helps them decide 24/7, in your customer’s language. It’s the difference between a shelf and a salesperson.

Proof: a store rebuilt to actually sell

We did exactly this for Cherry Vibes: an online store obsessed with all things cherry that started its life in Costa Rica. We migrated it to the U.S. market and rebuilt it end to end: Shopify set up for U.S. selling (payments, shipping, taxes), the full catalog, email automations, and a custom Shopify Hydrogen storefront that loads fast and looks like nobody else’s. Same beloved brand, new market, built to sell in it. Read the Cherry Vibes case study.

What this looks like with us

You’ve got a business to run. You don’t have time to become a full-time eCommerce operator. That’s the whole idea behind our Online Store plans: the store built and run right from the entry tier, with SEO product descriptions written by AI and reviewed by a human at every level. As you move up, we take on more of the machine: store SEO, email flows and campaigns, the AI shopping assistant, and finally your ads managed too. You pick how much of it we run.

If you can sell it in your shop, we can help you sell it online. Tell us what you make.
